Charismatic Venezuelan conductor Domingo Hindoyan made an immediate and lasting impression on his first visit to Nottingham last season. This vibrant concert is the perfect showcase for his winning partnership with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Originally a set of miniatures for piano, Bizet’s Jeux d’enfants is a delightful child’s eye view of the world, its playful energy perfectly captured in the composer’s deft orchestration. In sharp contrast, Brahms’s ardently Romantic Double Concerto pitches violin against cello in an electrifying emotive dialogue, both tautly dramatic and meltingly beautiful. The brilliant Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma has an eloquent partner in the multiple award-winning French cellist Victor Julien-Lafferrière.

The rest of the programme brings two visions of Spain from France and Russia. Debussy’s Impressionist version drew entirely on his imagination, as he’d spent barely a few hours in Spain, but this dazzling montage of strumming guitars, heady Andalusian nights and festive spirit makes an intoxicating mix. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol draws more overtly on Spanish dance forms, from the joyous, dawn-hailing alborada to the spirited fandango of the finale, all delivered with irresistible verve.
